This museum is one of the victims of the local economic crisis and budget cuts. Great content on all musical rhythms Ponce and Puerto Rico has brought to the world. But not enough budget for good guides, AC or to keep things running well. It is also normally close. Still would recommend to visit the place due to its historic and cultural content.

This museum was on the top of my list when traveling to Puerto Rico. Upon our arrival at the museum , on 6/15/17, the museum gates were locked. I called the number listed for the museum and the call was answered by a lady who told me I needed to meet her in front of the church in the plaza. She told me once I met her there I can wait for the tour guide who could take me to other museums. This was completely unreasonable since I just wanted to go to the museum of Puertorican music, and found this very odd since museums usually allow people to go in and view exhibits at their own leisure. I declined her offer since it was so strange. I also told her none of this was indicated in the museum's website, to which she responded: it's not on the website because they're recent changes. I hope management views this review and tries to offer better experiences for visitors, and for those planning a visit to call in first and not waste time traveling to visit this museum (like I did), just to be given the run-around.

Just went and the place seems to have closed permanently. Can't say if this is forever but if it is true it will have been a great loss to the city of Ponce :(.

The museum is great not only for the instruments and the history, but the house is a beauty in itself. If you go there look at the floor is a good example of local hydraulic tiles (losa criolla).

If your a musician or appreciates music and culture this is the place to be! The tour guide was well informed, she even gave demonstration of some of the instruments. It was free of cost, and makes a great place to visit while sightseeing.
